It’s college application season! You’ve sent in your early decision apps and the deadline for regular decision is coming up. Applications not only showcase your grades and test scores, they display your roles in extracurricular activities. Ivy Global (not to mention colleges and employers) values developing leadership skills in all our students.

Our students develop self-awareness, self-motivation and set high goals for themselves in their personal and academic life. You can cultivate these skills, too! In our college admissions seminars, our education consultants talk about the 7 habits of successful students.

You may know of the popular self-help book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and this list is similar to that, but the habits are specifically related to being a student. The 7 habits of successful students are as follows:

Be Proactive / Never Procrastinate

Procrastination is widespread – more than 90% students regularly procrastinate
Set specific goals
Develop great study habits and time management skills

Look for a mentor/coach

Healthier relationships, attitudes and lifestyle choices
Enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence
Improved interpersonal skills

Persevere through challenges

Challenges will arise and having the perseverance to push through and come out stronger with accomplishment will affect the successes for the rest of your life

Have a great attitude

Have a positive attitude, compliment others, and express gratitude

Learn to exercise / eat healthy

Healthy body, healthy mind!

Be motivated intrinsically

Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in a behavior or taking part in an activity because it is personally rewarding; basically, doing
something for its own sake rather than an external reward.

Strive for excellence

Excellence is about outstanding work, not perfect work
Do your best
Increase your confidence and self-esteem

Now that we’ve laid out the basic 7 habits of successful students, please check back soon for additional blog posts discussing each habit
more in-depth.
